Open Windows — A Healing Poem About Grief, Self-Care, and Welcoming Life Again

Open Windows
Today I opened the windows.
The curtain lifted,
and the room
smelled like somewhere
a person could live.
I had kept the air still,
afraid a breeze
might carry away
the last of you.
Outside,
someone was laughing.
A car would not start.
The neighbor called her son
to come inside.
Life had continued
within hearing distance.
I stood there
until the sun reached my feet,
then moved your photograph
so I could set down
the flowers I bought myself.
About This Poem
After a loss, even a room can become something you are afraid to disturb. Keeping the air still can feel like keeping a person close, as though opening the window might betray what mattered.
The sounds outside are ordinary and imperfect. They remind the speaker that there is a life within reach, even before it feels possible to join it. Moving the photograph does not erase the love. It makes room for flowers chosen in the present, and for a person who still deserves to live there.
