Learning My Own Company — A Healing Poem About Solitude, Self-Acceptance, and Being Enough

Learning My Own Company
I took myself to dinner.
Asked for a table
before I could change my mind.
At first,
I watched the door,
as if being alone
needed an explanation
that might walk in late.
Then the food arrived.
The waiter asked
if I needed anything else.
I looked at the empty chair.
No,
I said,
and meant it
for the first time that evening.
On the way home,
I played the song I like
all the way through.
About This Poem
An empty chair can make you feel visible in a way you did not ask to be. The speaker watches the door because solitude still feels like something that needs defending, or an absence someone else might arrive to fix.
The change comes without an announcement. A meal is enjoyed. A question gets an honest answer. A favorite song plays to the end. This poem asks what becomes possible when you stop treating your own company as a temporary arrangement and begin allowing it to be enough for an evening.
